The Power of Intention

by Peyton Hamilton

I like to think that each time I come to my mat to practice, I am performing a small ritual.

The intention of the ritual changes – sometimes it’s for myself, sometimes it’s for others. When we exercise we exert a large amount of energy physically. But where does this energy go? Whether we realize it or not, we are energetic beings who are constantly generating, releasing, storing, exchanging, sending and transmuting energy with the people, places and things around us. We are all innate energy workers; most just aren’t conscious of what we are doing or what we are actually capable of.

When we purposefully direct the energy that we generate during our physical practices, we can actually help create the changes we wish to see in the world. When this energy is harnessed and directed somewhere specific through our intentions, magical things can and will happen.

In the midst of all of the chaos, confusion and uncertainty we are experiencing as a collective, we can’t forget that as humans, we are the powerful creators of our shared reality. What we think, what we believe, what we set intentions for and what we invest our energy in becomes what we experience in our daily lives. We may not be in control of a lot, but we are in control of our energy. Nothing will ever change that fact.

So the next time you find yourself on your mat, I urge you to consider if you are being intentional with where your energy is going. Ask yourself: Where does the energy need to go today? How could you use your practice to help yourself or help others? Are you setting intentions? Could you be dedicating your energy to a cause that you’re passionate about (the same way you would with your time or money)?

I believe that our practices are a tool that can help heal the world, if we are intentional with our energy. I encourage you to tap into your inner energy worker warrior and use your practice (or any form of energy exertion/exercise) to fight for the changes you wish to see in the world and in your self. Imagine if millions of people all over the world dedicated their practices to light, truth, peace, unconditional love, harmony, compassion, forgiveness, hope, faith, freedom… Can you imagine the potential? Do you feel empowered yet?
